Jim,

The patent on LZW has only expired in the United States. It is still valid well into the next year in Europe and certain Asian countries.

More than its use with GIF, I am glad that the patent on LZW is expiring. It is a useful dictionary based algorithm that has been used in several specifications such as PDF, PostScript, TIFF, V.42bis and compress.
