Gimp-user Digest, Vol 2, Issue 8

I have stumbled into this effect before but do not remember how. I want to
place text on a picture, but create a carved look around the letters as if
the picture was scraped away and the letters were revealed. A nice recessed
3-D look. Not torn away, but just bordered a little to make the letters
look behind.

Hope that explains it....now can someone point me to instructions?

Thanks-

Jim Clark

Hi Jim,

I think what you stumbled into was the inverted bumpmap. when you make a for the letters to be bumped up into the above layer, you can reverse this so that the letters seem to be pressed into the above picture. that might be the look your looking for. if so, in the bumpmap dialog box click the invert option.

Gimp-user Digest, Vol 2, Issue 14

hi

i'd like to know how i can draw a diagram with straight lines and boxes with gimp. i've searched around but the closest i could get was how to draw pixels with paint brush - this doesn't help me much when trying to make lone straight lines

Let's see. . . .

Drawing a Box

1. Choose the rectangle select tool. 2. Draw a box that matches the borders you want. 3. Fill the box with the FG color (Edit->Fill->Foreground or control-comma)
4. Choose Select->Shrink.
5. Fill the box with the BG color (Edit->Fill->Background or control-period).
6. You have a rectangle with a border the foreground color filled with BG color.

Drawing a long line

1. With pencil tool (brush if you want fuzzy edges to the line), select the start point.
2. Holding down the shift key, select the end point.

You might want to check out dia. The interface is much like gimp, but it does much like what you're looking for. Flowcharts, electrical circuits and such.

If that's not what you need, there's a great straight line tutorial here:

a much easier way, is to select a box shape, and go to selection ->stroke, with the color you want your borders to be

If I use gimp, it is because I do not want to steal photoshop. ;-)

You could go to Google images, and just steal one. :-)

If you add "freeware" to your search string it' s not even stealing.

Hi,

Sorry this is somewhat out of topics.

I am not a talented artist, and I am looking for drawing indicating that the site is under construction. yellow cones, men at work sign etc. (copyright notice will be restected)

I am also looking for a nice 'made with Gimp' logo

Thanks in advance

Philippe

For the "made with the Gimp" logo it would be sacrilege not to try "Script Fu > Logos".
There must be something there that grabs you. Cheers

thanks,

I use a lot script fu it is great (I particularly like frosty with adventure font), but I am looking for something more original requiring talents I do not have.

I found one with the fox on it and another one with a wave on it.

i tried creating an animated GIF file in my windows version of the GIMP, BUT it didn't recognize the format. when i went to school it worked fine on a linux version...
