video->frames?

I'm running 1.2.3-4 on Linux and am having no luck with the 'Split video into frames' function, with either mpeg or avi. I have two questions:

1) I have xanim running, but was unable to build the xanim distro listed in gimp's error screen -- the process looks not at all trivial. Any reports from others?

2) An alternative to a direct import could be to break up an mpeg file (via 'mpeg2decode') into ppm's and then bring them into gimp that way. Does gimp have a function that could populate a file's layers with a group of images, short of a mind-numbing cut-&-paste?

Any ideas or suggestions appreciated!
