Free select tool not selecting

Free select tool not selecting
It is a png image, I have hit return after selecting the image with the free select tool, I have tried all of the modes. When I select the object, it never actually selects (no moving ants) the object. When I hit enter, the line I have around my object just disappears. When I select invert, it does nothing to the object. What am I doing wrong?
