2.10.12 slow on openSUSE Leap 15.2 and Xeon CPUs

HP Z820 dual Xeon (16 total cores) and 128 GB of RAM - pretty decent resources, right? gimp 2.10.12 with openSUSE Leap 15.2 (5.3.18 kernel)

Certain operations take a lot longer on my Z820 workstation but run in a second or less on my Fedora i7 laptop. Specifically: Auto white balance - 25 seconds on Z820 vs. near instant on laptop. Export Image as JPEG (dialog after choosing filename and clicking first Export button = 53 seconds on Z820 vs. near instant on laptop.

Is there something quirky about running gimp on Xeon processors or on openSUSE? Some optimization I'm missing either in the OS or app? It's really becoming quite frustrating.

Thanks in advance for your advice.
