GIMP clashes with Excel & other apps, any fix?

GIMP clashes with Excel & other apps, any fix?
I almost never have Excel closed, and this can become a problem when I'm using GIMP. For whatever reason, these two don't like each other, though the side effects don't always manifest immediately - when they do, it results in Excel hanging indefinitely until I close GIMP, which immediately and fully resolves the issue.
This isn't isolated to just Excel. My recollection is that some loss of functionality was experienced in GIMP when I had a DAW app called FL Studio open. This seemed mostly to correspond to hotkeys not working, but not as serious as the Excel problem.
