GIMP kickstarter?

Hello everyone another fan of GIMP here!

As you know gimp is an awesome program made mainly by passionate volunteers and it is open source and completely free.

...Unfortunately that also means that it doesn't get the funding other similar "bussiness" projects do. For instance Photoshop, corel painter or paint tool sai to name a few.

While it's great the fact that this proyect is supported by donations and by the free work of the developers. I assume that they have other comitments to earn a living.

I think We all could help (via kickstarter) to fund a "big" jump on this program Mainly buying more manpower and/or whatever resources the developers might need to get a lot of improvements in a sh0rter amount of time or even pay the developers to have them in this proyect longer.

Donations as of now tend to be random and aimless. With a kickstater The GIMP team could easily get 1 million dollars (or maybe even more) though donations. If the people know that they are getting a product they love much faster.

What do you think?

I think that your assessment is valid for almost all FOSS software, not just Gimp. Which issues specifically would you like to see fixed with the hypothetical 1 million dollars raised?

Hello there

I am not a professional at all,so I don't feel the right to say wich features are must haves. But personally I would like a better UI and improvements for digital painting :).

I would be happy that the team7community decided which improvents they think would be the best and more of a priority. I believe GIMP can be much better than it already is.

You guys retain the rights of the software. but if you don't feel confortable with that there are in fact other funding proyects that are similar but for opensource . Smile.

GIMP kickstarter?

Fundraising for one big program/enviroment might be difficult - how do we agree which funcionality should be improved/fixed first?

Maybe it would be easier to accept GIMP as an ecosystem, and focus on funding plugins for certain jobs? Or maybe there is already some kind of market where we can specify what such plugin should do and hire someone to write it?

A first step would be to have this discussion on the gimp-developer mailing list, where the current GIMP developers are available.

Michael You're right in term of changing something in GIMP as a program itself. Not sure how open is this place for users (i don't mean how patient are You in case of next flamewar like save/export. It's rather how open would You be to questions like: what can be done to use GIMP for imposition)

What about changing/writing plugins for some special purposes? Is it matter for gimp-developer mailing list, or maybe there is already some kind of market for such services, or maybe we need such place?

Imposition? You mean like n-up printing? Why would you do that with GIMP?

My impression is that it sounds a bit like "Let's fund anything, anything via Kickstarter!" :) Please let's not try to treat crowdfunding as a silver bullet.

The general idea is that the core team already has jobs they like. A crowdfunding effort is possible for other contributors and, in fact, there was a semi-successful case with new samplers in GEGL (http://www.freedomsponsors.org/core/issue/78/add-other-samplers-that-properly-reduce-downsample-and-warp-images).

Again, as Michael stated, this should be discussed on the mailing list for developers.

Why would FallenLegend need to know that? Relax, people can't (and shouldn't) know everything, and I wouldn't call myself a developer anyway, as opposed to Michael who also replied in the thread :)

Fair enough, though I'd expect at least some familiarity with this ml prior to "hey let's do is cool thing" type posts.

You should subscribe to the gimp-developer list - a discussion where every other message has to be approved manually is not very efficient.
