They are rasterized already. There's supposed to be an option to convert the text layer to a standard pixel layer. The only difference this will make it that in the layers dialog it will show a preview instead of the T symbol.

There is no such option (yet), but nothing keeps you from painting on a text layer. Don't be afraid, try it.
