Need help with Filters>Animate>Blend

Need help with Filters>Animate>Blend
VERSION 2.10.24
I am not an experienced GIMP user ... but I have been using it for a while to join/stitch animated gifs that would not otherwise be able to be saved by my 32 bit gif maker
Recently ... I moved to doing my animated gif's via GIMP and had no issues until today
Up until now I had only been doing 2 frame (really 3 as the program requires it) blend (fades) and had no issues
Today .... I tried to do a 5 frame blend ...
1) Loaded each of my images as a separate layer
2) Clicked on my first layer (the layer I wish to be the start of my loop)
3) Filters > Animate > Blend
4)
INTERMEDIATE FRAMES - 23 MAX BLUR RADIUS - 0
5) Then did the blend
when I preview the output ... it seems to have chosen a random order in which to have blended the layers ... for some reason ... it seems to start with the middle (layer 3) of my 5 layer
Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Absolutely no idea what is wrong. Not a filter I use but...
Add a new empty transparent layer at the bottom of the layer stack and start the filter from there.
This is what I get.
