how can i get such a grid on a normal image?

Further would be cool if i could get x and y axis's plotted all the way to the middle.

For your case, the Guide Grid Perl script used with the guides To Selection script are probably more useful. Create the grid of guides first, then convert them to a selection. Finally, use Edit->Stroke to draw the grid.

The Grid plug-in (Filters->Render->Patterns->Grid) is probably a lot easier to use and more versatile.

Yep, gimp-perl did the trick. Though i was in windows when i needed it, i know where to look when im in linux now. Also good to hear that grid'ing is being worked on and currently on the CVS.
