The GIMP egg hunt

the author of the egg showed me the path to this one, it is pretty cool. so, open your gimp-1.2 and grab an image.

make a selection (http://carol.gimp.org/mygimp/tutorials/selections/) and then grab the Layers, Channels and Paths Dialog.

shift click on the Selection to Path Button (circle with paths on the top and bottom) and ... bingo!!

too scary for me actually to play with. seems very powerful, however.

Doesn't work for Win32 port 1.2.4

Mine worked. I did have to click on 'New Path' first to make the 'Selection to Path' button available though.

Now what the hell it does is beyond me. Eric

Okay, the newbie is confused. I know of a "Layers and Channels" dialogue but I can't find anything to do with Paths in it. Are there any simpler words or do I have to find it myself one day before I can grok in fullness?

Disappointedly yours, Ricky&

If you use gimp 1.2, the L&C has a third tab, named Paths. The menu entry also has that. Are you sure you use gimp 1.2?

well, sorry. i made a screen shot of the three areas of interest here: http://carol.gimp.org/alts_egg-buttons.png

circled in black are the Paths Tab and the button to shift click on. the blue circle is the new path button mentioned in this thread.

sorry about that, i had to add an new path as well, i am using a gimp-1.2 from cvs and i was hoping it was a quality of cvs and not of the tarballs or distributions gimp.

apparently the dialog helps to refine your selection.

This looks like the autotrace frontline GUI. IIRC, autotrace has or had a plugin for gimp:
http://autotrace.sourceforge.net/
http://autotrace.sourceforge.net/frontline/ and a nice screen shot:

Regards,

Olivier.

PS: Carol, try some Canadian beers from Unibroue, they are worth it (close to belgium beers, but maybe easier to get in the US) http://www.unibroue.com/products/bieres.cfm
