saving layers

What is the best file type to save a layered image in, without losing resolution/accuracy, such as happens in gif. I found that xcf preserves layers... any better suggestion?

XCF is the GIMP's own native format so that is the best one to use. It is also possible to save in PSD format, which is the Photoshop native format and also preserves the layers. However unless you have a need to edit the images later in Photoshop you should just stick to XCF.
