mime types in gnome, xcf

I want my filemanager (gmc) to automatically use gimp to open xcf files. Assuming I need to edit my gnome mimetypes, how exactly should that line read? A related issue I think is making sure that if gimp is already running, clicking on an xcf does not start another instance of the gimp. All suggestions are appreciated.

Shawn.
