Getting the best from old B/W images!!?

Hi Folks
...I've scanned some old 120 roll negatives..these haven't been particularly well looked after, and scans show specks of dust, small scratches.... I'm hoping to 'restore' the images, as best I can, and produce a digital family archive.

Hoping that there might be a tutorial 'out there' that might help? Noticed the Filters dropdown in GIMP, and spotted enhance/despeckle, which I'm hoping might be of some use?

After a bit of Googling....came across the idea of using layers to 'thicken' the original lower contrast image in order to improve final contrast...so will be exploring that.

Any tips would be much appreciated
