still boring export - save as - discussion
Hi friends,
the boring discussion resurrect again and again, it's ridiculous. I sent two contributions to the save-firestorms before
but it seems that no one to whom it concerns read it and thought only one second about the developer's "why".
Why do all the trolls still use this unprofessional and inefficient GIMP ? Why they don't switch to ADOBE
for instance? Oh, I know: You can't ask ADOBE for help without paying for an expensive contract.
So be happy with GIMP and if not stimulate your brain to learn new keystrokes to use GIMP 2.8.
The only constructive mail came from Johan
(Ctrl-E and Shift-Ctrl-E open the same export dialog, which is a waste)
take as an example!

Many inward looking individuals with their view obscured by the matter within their colon.

Just noticed that there is a new, at least to me, menu option under "File", "Overwrite ", which effectively accomplishes the action desired by those unable to adjust. Perhaps an attempt has been made to lower the noise ratio here.

overwriting the original is usually NOT a good idea.. I'm a firm believer in renaming. I usually rename adding an "s" at the end ( small) when I create 1024X XXX size photos to share in email & facebook..

This has been in the specification for ages and has been implemented for ages.

This is however exactly, what all these threads ask for when asking for the "old" save behaviour.

Bye, Simon
that is one good reason to stay on Windows & use Adobe Photoshop Elements. I used Elements for years, and like it. It is installed on my Windows 7 partition ( dual-boot computer). I decided to go back to Linux recently, and the "new 2.8 Gimp" behavior was a shock to me, having used the old gimp for years.

It's been available since the very beginning, Patrick.
Your observation makes me wonder how many people actually understand what they discuss.

Guess I just never took time or had need of it. I have no problem with the "new" way, it's just different. I had to adjust the file-name before to *not* overwrite and seldom worked on jpeg files. Jpeg files are to me something to show or display on my web site, I mostly shoot raw and convert.
What bothered me the most of 2.8 was the change in "Shrink Wrap" and "Fit Image in Window". But this is an effect of old finger are hard to retrain :^).
tks,

That is precisely what that command is made for -- exporting back to the original non-XCF file with a minimum of prompts and dialogs. JPG's will still prompt you for compression options the first time you click it, but a lot of pixel-perfect file formats will be able to output straight back with no interruptions.
HOWEVER, it is interesting to note that despite appearances, the "Overwrite" and "Export" menu options are actually different commands internally and only one of them gets the Ctrl+E shortcut. This was apparently deliberate, but I know I don't entirely like it.

Of course it was deliberate :)
In terms of UX, conditional menu items are evil.
