Can GIMP be coaxed to open a corrupt image file

Some of my jpegs are slightly messed-up after being data-recovered. On my Mac 10.6.6, "JustLooking" can open and display in entirety one of these files. I've been screen-capturing those images in JustLooking and editing those in GIMP, with loss of picture quality. Hopefully there's a way to tell GIMP to not be so strict about the way it tests an image file for 'open-ability'.

Thanks for any help.
