could anyone tell me the theory of tile based memory managerment system?--a newbie

i have read the sourcecode of tile based memory managerment module of gimp, without some related docs i could'nt understand all the theory behind the code,i have searched the internet for a long time, and could'nt find any papers about tile based memory managerment, could any guys give me a help.
