Hum, the only available GImp in Ubuntu Software center is Gimp 2.6.12-1ubuntu1.3

There is no option to upgrade or download 2.8.

So

Here is a PPA for Ubuntu 12.04 and I think for 11.04 and 11.10.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gimp

You can get the .deb files from the Ubuntu package repository directly (packages.ubuntu.com), or just use the Ubuntu DVD instead of the CD -- it contains much more packages that can be installed without Internet access, including GIMP: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/alternative-download#dvd

Can we not have a .deb download for those of us without an ubuntu computer connect to the internet?
