Clipping Path
I saw some mention (mailing list early 2001) of Gimp & the ability to set a clipping path.
What is the current status on this?
Has it been implemented or is it on the drawing board?
Just curious. Eric Pierce

What would such a clipping path do? I mean...there are "clipping paths" in postscript, and GIMP selections have the functionalities that those have (and a couple more)
Just curious.

Joao,
Clipping Paths are a new concept to me too.
First let me explain a tad...
For page layout work, at work we use (don't laugh) PageMaker. Me and the other guy recently learned that we could import raster images w/transparency and actually have it display properly in PageMaker. We also learned that the tif must have a clipping path. Basically, it's a path with a special designation as a 'clipping path' and everything inside the path will show, and everything outside the clipping path is transparent. There's a little rivalry at work because my colleage uses Photoshop while I use The Gimp. As it would be, PS could do a clipping path, but I couldn't see that Gimp could. In PS, you bring up the context menu with the paths menu up and designate which path will be the 'clipping path'. That's it. I don't know about the internals of the tif file, or if it's even a recognized spec in tif. I can throw up an image somewhere if anyone is curious to check it out.
At work I'd like us both to drop Windows all together and go with Scribus/Gimp, but that might not happen anytime soon.

Clipping paths are a well-known concept but just like you I don't know much about the implementation and how standardized this is. Did you check if our bug-tracker has an enhancement request for clipping paths yet? If not, it would be nice if you could file one and add as many information as possible.

I added this enhancement request as well (bug #131982 ) I was wrong. It's an eps file that can save a clipped path, not tif.

Well, tif can save a clipping path. And I actually have no idea how to extract a clipping path from an EPS without parsing the eps.
*except* that the EPS can contain a preview TIFF, which itself could contain a clipping path, but I am guessing wildly here.
Bye, Simon

Not implemented, but it's mentioned among 2.8 goals.

I think clipping path is a image editing method. Using Photoshop one can easily creates a path in order to remove the rearing side.

Photoshop clipping paths designate transparent areas in images. A clipping path can isolate part of an image; the rest of the image is transparent when the image is placed in a page layout. A common example is to make a clipping path of a foreground object to exclude or mask out the background. As a graphics design professional i suggest to make clipping path using photoshop pen tool which really allow to cutout images very sharp. A Clipping Path refers to the non-printing line that delimitates a certain area of a raster image that is going to be printed, while the rest is left out. A clipping path service should be employed when you want to eliminate the background of an image. Many specialists use a pen tool to perform such clipping path tasks.recently I have been learning to use the Clipping Path to deal with images, I found it is very practical.

Oh Eric, I do not know what's the actual function of clipping path in GIMP?? i found a nice definition for you to share what exactly clipping path mean, they say, "A clipping path is nothing!! but sketching the concluded compass reading or vector Path that image surrounds by the special hard edge which is done by many image manipulation software. You may think clipping path as a closed path usually acts like a clipping mask. They use Adobe Photoshop pen tool to knockout the outside path of an image." So, Eric you like it...All though i do not know any the above inside statement.
If you find your update status let me know. I am curious for your reply!

Its function is to mock everyone by going on being not implemented :)
However, every path in your GIMP document is saved as clipping path when you export to TIFF.

Dear Eric,
Clipping Path is the process of removing background from any image and can place it any other background. And this technique is getting popular day by day.Besides it is exploring new areas also.

Photoshop Clipping Path is a process in which an object can be cut from an image and then can be added to any background of your own choice. Most widely used services are of Clipping Path which is also known as deep etch, cut out &background removing. Get more resources-https://www.pixelzcenter.com/clipping-path-service/
