acting on several layers

is there a way (and tutorial) on applying changes to several layers at once? for example .... as if they had already been merged?

You can't paint on seeral layers at once.

However, you can transform together (i.e. move, scale, rotate) several layers: there is a linking feature in the GIMP.

Linked layers are toggled by clicking just to the right of the eye visibility icon on the layers dialog.

What if you created a separate transparent layer on top of the layers you want to paint. Paint on this layer then merge it with the layers you want to have it applied?

You can do that if you do all the painting on the transparent layer and then duplicate it for each layer you want to merge it with.

Copy Visible + Paste onto each destination layer is a better way to do it. Or scripting the propagation of the paint layer -- that would be a simple modification to do to my Apply Layer command
