what causes platform color differences

I'm having trouble with a background image and
.

The image is very pale. It displays nicely on my Mac and my FreeBSD box but on the Windows machine the reds and yellows are completely washed out.

What causes such a difference in display and how can I minimise that effect?

They both look pale on my Linux driven monitor. It sounds like you are hitting a gamma issue. I -think- the Mac uses a gamma of 1.8 where as Linux and Windows is usually set to a gamma of 2.2. You might check out this site and see if it helps: http://www.normankoren.com/makingfineprints1A.html#gammachart
