4 character file extensions problems

For some reason I get an "Unsupported File Format" error when trying to open a .jpeg file. Renaming it to .jpg works fine though.

After some searching, I found this thread that appears to be the same problem.

I haven't been able to find a solution yet and was hoping someone here could shed some light.

xubuntu 12.04LTS

gimp 2.8.10

Just cp'ed a jpg to jpeg extention and opened with gimp-2.8.10 on openSUSE Tumbleweed, which equates to 13.1+, w/o a problem ???

Yeah,
I posted over on gimpchat as well and other people don't seem to have this problem either, but as I'm not the only one, I was hoping I could get some help troubleshooting it. Not sure where to start.

Do these people also use 2.8.10 from the same PPA on *buntu 12.04?

No idea, I built mine which may be the problem. Not using any ppa. I don't recall any compile errors, but it's been a while. I guess it's not that big of a deal, was just hoping it was something simple to track down.
