TIFF layers support in Gimp ?

TIFF layers support in Gimp ?
Hi
I try to edit somi TIFF files with layers. Gimp 2.8.6 opens it as a flat file. I see only old threads about Gimp not able to edit layers in TIFF ! Is it still the case or is Gimp now able to edit layers in TIFF files ?
