greyscale in monchrome images

Hi. I've got B/W monochrome bmp files. Is there a way to change ... say a region which is a solid black filled rectangle to a rectange with only 75% of the pixels in 'black' state?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

fastest way seem to be:
- select the region were you want to make this. - Float selection (selection->float) - reduce opacity on floated selection to 75% - change layer combination mode on floated selection to "dissolve" instead of "normal".
- anchor selection back.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
