we need more documentation

Hi,

now that GIMP 2.2 is out and the major problems with the early 2.2.x releases seem to have been fleshed out, it would be nice if we could put some effort into documenting some of the new stuff that's hidden in the 2.2 version. So this is a plea for help on documenting things. I am sorry that I don't have the time to do all this myself, but I can at least try to make a list of things that I think would be worth writing about...

- (re)configuring keyboard shortcuts (using Dynamic Shortcuts, the new Shortcut Editor or simply by editing the menurc

- the new file-chooser dialogs and how to use them best (explain keybindings and the use of bookmarks)

- copy and paste between GIMP and other apps (what works, what doesn't)

- drag and drop (inside GIMP and to and from other apps)

- the new input controllers and how to use them o configuring the mouse wheel
o configuring the cursor keys
o fancy USB input devices
o using MIDI equipment as GIMP input devices

- setting up a tablet for use in GIMP

- a collection of tips and tricks focusing on stuff that's new in 2.2

- nifty things you can tweak in the Preferences dialog and in gimprc

- customizing the GIMP user interface

- customizing the splash image

- batch processing images

There are also a couple of changes that affect developers which should be mentioned, probably best added to the API reference manuals:

- migrating plug-ins/scripts from GIMP 1.2 GIMP 2.x o how to use GIMP_DISABLE_DEPRECATED o how to use the --pdb-compat-mode command-line option

- new widgets in 2.2 o GimpPreview
o GimpIntComboBox
o ...

- new PDB functions o gimp-context API and how to use it

All of this stuff (and more) would be nice to have. The format and place doesn't really matter but of course it would be best to integrate this somehow into one of the following resources:

- the GIMP User Manual (please contact gimp-docs list) - the www.gimp.org web-site (please contact gimp-web list) - the developer.gimp.org web-site (ditto) - the API reference manuals (please contact gimp-developer list) - the man-pages (ditto)

But you could just write up something, put it online and post the URL here or just send us some text that we will try to add where appropriate. Docs also don't have to be perfect. It's often sufficient to start with something. Docs can always be completed and improved later. The developers will happily point out wrong information and fill in the missing bits.

I'd appreciate if we could gather such good topics for documentation in a central place. Bugzilla would be an idea but this seems more like a great chance for the Wiki: Let's make that an itemizedlist and put it on the Wiki together with some WikiLinks so that people can start hacking their ideas in....

any suggestions where this information can be found?

- customizing the GIMP user interface

http://carol.gimp.org/gimp2/news/toolbox/

i can contribute to additional documentation about the things mentioned above.

- customizing the splash image

this has been something i have quite a bit of impartial experience with lately (and earlier also) and much of the work has been done already towards this on my web site:
http://carol.gimp.org/gimp2/news/splash/

that said, i was unable to get the random splash screens i read about recently ....

There's some info in the gimprc man-page but I guess some more documentation doesn't hurt. But perhaps there are less nifty things there than I claimed to be ;)

The random splash feature is explained in gimp(1). That info is rather concise though and http://gimp.org/about/splash/ doesn't mention it at all.

You don't mention how to change the default preview size by editing ~/.gimp-2.2/gtkrc.

Unfortunately I don't understand most of these things myself in a detailed enough way to write about them (except drag and drop, which works on everything I have tried it on, and the file chooser, which I don't like to write about because I think the best advice is to avoid it and use drag-and-drop from some sort of browser). But if anybody cares to provide any *specific* facts about these things that would be useful for users to know, I'll undertake to get them into the User Manual (in English, of course). I don't need brilliant prose -- sketchy notes are fine, as long as I can understand them.

In any case I'll write something about the File Chooser. I understand bookmarks, Ctrl-L, and how to use the file type list. If there are more features that should be explained, please let me know about them.

(We actually do a pretty good job of explaining most things in Preferences, I think.)

GTK+ 2.6 (and some hacked versions of GTK+ 2.4 such as the ones that Debian Sid and RedHat are shipping) support typeahead in the file-chooser which allows for some pretty nice keyboard navigation. This makes the Ctrl-L unneeded for a lot of cases.

Mitch and me also agreed that we would like to do something about http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=162385 and even get that change into the stable branch. The fact that the file-chooser in GIMP doesn't remember the last used folder in GIMP 2.2 was probably a wrong decision.

I am sorry if I mentioned some things in my list that are already handled well in the user manual. I haven't found the time to actually read it and my mail was just a collection of things that came to mind as potentially interesting for our users. I didn't mean to say that our docs suck (they don't!). I was just afraid that there are a number of things in 2.2 that are too well hidden. It would be a shame if features like the MIDI input controller support would remain an experiment on Mitch's and Simon's laptops simply because there's no document explaining how to setup this stuff.

I don't know if you're soliciting votes, but it would be a huge help if the Save As dialog remembered the last location, as the bug suggests. I hit this nearly every time I save a file.

Is someone already working on it, or do you need a volunteer?

Yes, I have already hacked on this. Needs some cleanup and should be in CVS tonight.

i have been working on some of the things on this list. i am curious what others have accomplished towards fullfilling this reasonable request.

- nifty things you can tweak in the Preferences dialog and in gimprc

i am currently working on the Preferences dialog and am in need for some sane words to describe how to set the units globally. i realize it was discussed on this mail list, however i am finding it difficult to concisely explain how to set the units globally in the way a user could understand and in a way that is actually effective globally.

- customizing the GIMP user interface

i have two different documents describing how to change the gimps docks and tabs; a short description and a long one.

the shorter version: http://carol.gimp.org/gimp2/basics/gui/docks-tabs.html the longer version:
http://carol.gimp.org/gimp2/basics/gui/all_my_docks_and_tabs.html

- customizing the splash image

http://carol.gimp.org/gimp2/basics/gui/splashes/

in addition to the requests on this list, i wrote about how to configure the gimps gtkrc to adjust the plug-in preview size here:

http://carol.gimp.org/gimp2/basics/gui/gtkrc.html

i am open to corrections and suggestions and/or i will be happy to put the urls to everyone elses effort to fullfill the requests found on this list from these pages.

i am really stuck understanding how the new gimp handles units globally, perhaps it is a condition of too much information. a nice concise user friendly explanation of how it works now and what we get from this change would help me (and others).

thanks, carol
