The PDF looks rather nice and I think we should include it with the tarball. Is there a reason the .txt version is so horribly aligned if viewed with a fixed-width font? Would you mind if I fix it before I commit to CVS?

there's one more thing you might want to change. Your version states that keybindings can be dynamically reassigned. This is not any longer possible by default. You need to explicitely turn this feature on in the preferences dialog (labelled as "Dynamic Keyboard Shortcuts").

The idea behind this change is that this prevents users from accidentally reassigning shortcuts. The user should be advised that in order to change the keybindings, she should enable Dynamic Keyboard Shortcuts in the prefs, do the changes and redisable the feature afterwards.

While you are updating the text, please fix the spelling mistake at the end of the second paragraph: "it's binding" should be "its binding".

Suggestion for re-writing that paragraph:

The GIMP allows menu keybindings to be dynamically re-assigned. So if you don't like these, they are easy enough to change. To do this, you should first activate the "Dynamic Keyboard Shortcuts" in the preferences dialog. Then you can just highlight the menu item of your choice, and press the desired new key combination. If that combination is already assigned, the old command will lose its binding.

And please use a fixed-width font while editing the text file. This will ensure that all shortcuts are correctly aligned. You can check this by viewing the text file in a web browser, for example. It looks like the paragraphs in the text file were wrapped at line 65 (instead of the default 70 or 72). If you are using Emacs for editing the text file, you can use M-: followed by (setq fill-column 65) to wrap the text to the same column as in the original file.

Thanks! The text file looks much nicer now and both versions have a better introduction text. I would still like to add one more thing, maybe as a separate paragraph after the second one:

The Alt key is generally reserved for keyboard access to the menus. You can for example use Alt+F to access the File menu, etc. As in other GTK+ applications, you can then use the arrow keys or any of the underlined keys to navigate in sub-menus, select specific options or cycle through several options using the same shortcut key.

Feel free to re-write that paragraph if you find a nicer way to explain this. Also, the part with the underlined keys is not really true yet (especially for the filters) but hopefully it will work soon.

I also spotted one error in the file:

Filters Repeat "GFig".......................Alt+F Re-Show "GFig"......................Shift+Alt+F

This should be replaced by:

Filters Repeat "(Last Filter)"..............Ctrl+F Re-Show "(Last Filter)".............Shift+Ctrl+F

I've committed the updated keybindings.txt to CVS. I'm not sure what to do about the PDF version. We already have quick_reference.ps which serves a similar purpose but is outdated. Do you intend to extend the PDF to include the information that is in quick_reference.ps now? Should it perhaps be named gimp-quick-reference.pdf (or similar) then?

I have now uploaded the post script file from which the pdf file was made,
http://www.webone.com.au/~oc/gimp/keybindings.ps

quick_reference.ps (and tex) is a different document all together. It shows mouse combinations and actions etc. I have yet to start on that one.

keybindings.pdf was produced as an alternative to the text file, looks better.

Anyway, leave it to you.
