I run both WinXP Pro and Mandrake 10.0 was just loaded up yesterday. I have played with Mandrake for a couple of years now on and off but mostly off to be honest. So I'm not much into CVSing or compiling especially from what I read for compiling the GIMP 2.0 from scratch ( I need: pkg-config, GTK+ 2.2.2, GLib 2.2.0, Pango 1.2.0, ATK 1.2.0, FreeType2, Fontconfig, libart2). I'm not up to that, got too much going on so I was wondering if anyone has compiled an RPM of GIMP 2.0 for Mandrake 10.0 or are planning to and if so please post here with a link??

I'm sorry I have no idea what I'm supposed to do here.

I tried urpmi'ing in the console by typing urpmi gimp 2. and I got quite a list and the gimp was in there but I'm not sure if this is off an old list or a new data list on line. I'm an "old newbie", meaning I play with Mandrake but never had much use for it, but with the new Mandrake 10 it's MUCH more usable and would like to make sure that I have all the newest GIMP files installed, seeing as it's about the closest thing to Photoshop, which I use over in Windows XP.

Someone on the Windows users group was going to compile a Mandrake 10rpm of the GiMP but I guess he's busy right now so that's on hold! :-(

So if you don't mind doing a little hand holding then I might get the old linux juices flowing a bit more, I'm just not getting what to do on that site. I copy/pasted the info into a terminal (su/password/index.php,v 1.10 2004/05/10 20:44:07 trem Exp $) and then hit enter. I just blindly chose some mirrors and then proceeded as typed above and so I'm not sure what I did there but it didn't give me any errors or anything. What I need to know is which program I use to access these updates now. In Mandrake I have the following for software packages: Install, Remove, Updates, Media Manager and Manage computer group. I would imagine that I would use the Updates area but it doesn't give me any options to go outside of the Mandrake Official release mirrors. So that's where I'm stuck.

Hi Richard,

you can either use rpmdrake (section Media manager - Add new - it is selfexplanatory; then go to Install and try to look the gimp2 package) or go to console - and do the same thing using urpmi - it is the best to read "man urpmi". You will need to add new media and then install.

I have not checked whether gimp2 is available at the location above, however, this is a general way how to work with urpmi.

Thanks for the info Milan but NO I do not know how to set up RPMDrake or work from a console to that extent, I primarilly work from WinXP Pro.

I did download the main GIMP 2.01 tar.gz and in the install notes it says there are about 7 other files I need to download and install the following files:

1. You need to have installed a recent version of pkg-config available from http://www.freedesktop.org/software/pkgconfig/.

2. You need to have installed GTK+ version 2.2.2 or better. Do not try to use an older GTK+ version (1.2.x), it will not work. GTK+-2.2 itself needs recent versions of GLib, Pango and ATK. Sources for these can be grabbed from ftp://ftp.gtk.org/. GTK+-2.x and friends can be installed side by side with GTK+-1.2.

3. We require PangoFT2, a Pango backend that uses FreeType2. Make sure you have FreeType2 and fontconfig installed before you compile Pango. FreeType2 can be downloaded from http://www.freetype.org/. Fontconfig from http://x2.freedesktop.org/software/fontconfig.

4. We use libart2. Grab the module libart_lgpl out of GNOME CVS or fetch the tarball from
ftp://ftp.gnome.org/pub/gnome/sources/libart_lgpl/

5. You may want to install other third party libraries or programs that are needed for some of the available plugins. We recommend to check that the following libraries are installed: libpng, libjpeg, libtiff, gimp-print (4.2.x), gtkhtml-2, libmng, librsvg, libwmf.

That's just nuts. I guess I will have to wait untill someone actually takes the time to build an RPM for Mandrake, I just don't have the sort of patience.

It's bad enough that Linux doesn't have much to offer in the way of graphic apps that can do high end professional work but to have one of the only ones so hard to 'put together' I can't deal with that right now.

I'm impressed with Mandrake 10 so far but graphics are one of the main things I do on a computer, so I guess it's back to Windows, not really complaining, I just don't get too upset much any more. Maybe in another 5 or 10 years this OS will win me over but in the mean time I have work to do, over in Windows!

Thanks for the time you took to try to explain things to me, minimally but that's OK. I've wasted too many nights pulling out my hair over this stuff. I'm an artist not techie person. If I can't install a workable version of a needed piece of software without all this extra work then it's nice to know I have choices on another plateform.

: Well, Mandrake appears to be the only major Linux distribution that is : not yet offering a convenient way to install GIMP 2.0. So perhaps : instead of complaining, consider to use a different distribution. :

Hiya Dave,

Where do I get pre built binaries for Mandrake 10?? I wanted to check up on the Gimp.org but it's been down for the last 3 days. I run Mozilla here on Windows XP and Mandrake 10 and both sides are not letting me in. Also tried out IE and Konquorer, same thing. Sites down so I can't check up on anything and no one is giving me any feed back on the status of the site so far! :-( Wrote Sven and asked and wrote the WinGIMP Yahoo group and asked, nada!!! :-(

So if you know where I can obtain a prebuilt binary and if you know what all I will have to install along with it then please link me up.

The fact is that the GIMP 2.0 can be installed in an -almost- out of the box
mandrake 9.2 and, of course, 10.0

You probably just missed a step somewere or the other. If you are willing to compile the GIMP, downlaod the GIMP source, run "install", not down what is it complaining about, and install these packages with the "URPMI " command.

All the needed packages are pre-compiled binaries included in the Mandrake
CD-ROMs, but some are not instaleld by default. After a fresh install, the
URPMI command is setup to automatically fetch packages AND dependencies from
you mandrake CD's.

Just for being on the sfe side, install also the "devel" packages of everything you need to install. These are also in the CDROMs.

For example, if you need "Pango", check with "urpmi - y pango" what packages
are avalilable taht contain "pango", install "pango" and "pango*devel" with
the urpmi command.

Alternatively, if you want just to run the GIMP and not compile it, you may
get an RPM pre compiled in a Mandrake COOKER mirror on the web (mandrake cooker is roughly equivalent to Debian Unstable)

The cooker mirro list is at: http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/cookerdevel.php3

and check tehre for a gimp2 rpm. For example, the URL
ftp://mandrake.contactel.cz/Mandrake-devel/cooker/cooker/Mandrake/RPMS/gimp2_0-2.0.1-1mdk.i586.rpm has got an rpm file that most likely will install on a fresh mandrake 10 system.

Please don't give up. A few years ago, I was in the same boat you are

now

in. I wasn't a 'Linux Master' or even comfortable with using certain

Linux

tools, but after a while, I caught on, and have never looked back. I

use

Linux for artwork every day, and I also use Windows XP and Mac OS X. Because of client issues, I have to be able to handle at the very

least

Windows and Mac, but I have forced myself into the habit of using

Linux,

and I love it! GIMP is incredible on Linux (I use SuSE 9).
