What's the status of mng support?

Hi,

Sorry if this has been recently addressed, I'm new to this list.

I want to work in the mng http://www.libpng.org/pub/mng/#history format, and don't recall gimp supporting it, ie -- it's not a save option.

Too bad to, cause the png provides gorgious transparency, and mng provides gorgious animations with transparency.

Also, I've noticed my gimp png's transparentcy isn't showing correctly in Microsoft IE. Is this a bug with gimp, or MSIE?

Gimp 2.0 difficulties

1. We don't have directions for including XSane in the new Gimp.

2. The dialog for writing a PostScript file still resets to the wrong (for me) values, and I don't know how to set them permanently. I want no offsets, inches instead of cm, and encapsulated Postscript.

3. The text tool is different. Before when I used it I got a dialog that showed me a bunch of typefaces, allowed me to select a face and a size, and allowed me to type in a text string for pasting in my image. Now I get a dialog that only allows me to import text from a file. I don't know how to resize the text, change the font etc.

Any hints on the above?

this is up to the XSane people. gimp developers have nothing to do with it. however, one of them hacked it in about 10 minutes but out of respect for the sane people does not commit it.

they probably have their reasons -- if you discover those reasons please let us know on this list.

this is a big change in TheGIMP. The tools now work through the Tool Options dialog. Double click on the tool button and a dockable dialog should appear. it is confusing because the same old shortcuts located at the bottom of the toolbox do not "work". they wanted to remove them from the toolbox even.

for gradients and palettes; you have to make a copy and then edit that (last i checked) which is while not intuitive in the classic gimp ways at least logical after you start to work with this new tool way.

truthfully, i still look under images for color things and click on the brush icon on the toolbox first and then have to start it all over using the new way.

if you are like me, this new way will be mildly irritating even after you see the sense in it.

Where should he commit it? The XSane project doesn't have a CVS - and if it has, they hid it pretty good. AFAIK Sven sent his changes to the XSane maintainers.

well, i guess it is a matter of the gimp looking for it during the configuration process and when finding it, make the proper information available and give it a menu entry. look for xsane on the computer doing the building that is.

i was suprised that when i finally got my scanner to work, that all the gimp did was to call the Xsane gui up via the gimp menu. i have been using linux for a long time, where you use the software you need to work on the thing you are working on. i have no problems using xsane to make pngs and then using TheGIMP to open them and work on them -- it is not unlike my camera.

so it is a matter of whose app discovers the others app on the computer and then put the information into the menu. you might think that it was a little intrusive for the Xsane people to just go ahead and grap a menu position from TheGIMP.

difficult to say which is the more respectful approach.

btw, how does TheGIMP find the tiff libraries?

OK I sent a followup to Oliver Rauch with cc to this list. I hope we aren't in some sort of gridlock here.

Would someone in community be kind enough to look at and hopefully address items 2 and 3 below?

Plug-in defaults are planned but not for 2.0 and it's even unlikely to appear in 2.2. A quick search on bugzilla would have revealed this to you.

Use the text tool options. By default they appear right under the toolbox. If you put them somewhere else, a double-click on the tool icon should should raise them.
