How can I create an opaque to transparent horizontal gradient on a layer?

Add a layer mask, make it active, and draw your gradient with black and white as the active colors.

Turn on layer's Alpha channel (Slesct layer, then RM Click>Layers>Transparency>Add alpha channel), select it all, turn on gradien tool (shortcut is L), choose Mode - Normal, Gradient - FG to Transparent and here you go - do what you want.
