1 bit tiff

I have some 1 bit tiff images.
BitsPerSample (258) SHORT (3) 1
When I open them in GIMP to edit GIMP saves them as 8 bit. BitsPerSample (258) SHORT (3) 1
How can I get GIMP to save a image as 1 bit tiff?

Fedora Core 5 GIMP version 2.2.13

You can't. Well, currently, you can't. But as soon as GIMP 2.4 is released, you will be able to (see bug #162119 for details).
