gimp enhancement challenge!

i am a new member of the group, but quite a long-time GIMP user (at least since the late 90's, on solaris). i'm now up to gimp 2.2.11 on fedora 5.

i have a bit of a challenge as to enhancement filters.

i have a horribly noisy photograph (though one which pleases me sentimentally, as it is of my daughter Kitty, and her pet Boy-B. it was taken on a sidekick 3, which though a fine communicator, is cursed with an abysmal camera, at least for low light.

a scaled-down view of the image is: http://shinozuka.org/IMG00159-600pix.JPG

the full image is: http://shinozuka.org/IMG00159.JPG

a very kind friend from the Leica User's Group (a photographic mailing list) photoshopped what to me is an impressive rescue of the image:

i've got GIMP dcam and greycstoration filters, and while they definitely can improve on the original, i can't get anywhere near what my friend did--very possibly through my own ignorance.

is the gimp capable of improving images anywhere like that above?

if anyone took a shot at it, i'd be happy to post the results.

thanks greatly!
