slow loading 15mb tiff file.

Hi all,

I have tried to load 15Mb tiff file but it takes about 5-7 min just to load, I have tried to increase the tile cache size as recomended, but nothing happens i have tried with: 256M, 512, 768, 1g, and the improvement is minimal the CPU reaches 30% max.
I have a windows box with 1Gb RAM AMD 3000+ athlon.

If you have some ideas please help.

thanks in advance. best regards,
Dimitar

If you can make the file available to me, I could have a look. I just checked the source of the TIFF load plug-in and there is certainly room for improvements.

slow loading 15mb tiff file.

Hi,

this file is an image of 19680 x 17715 pixels. Since it's stored with indexed colors, the file is relatively small. However to load and display this image, GIMP will need to allocate about 1.3 GB of memory. If you don't have enough memory and the tile cache size set high enough, GIMP can still load this file. But it will need to swap tiles out to disk and that's what makes loading and working with this image so slow.

There are some things we could do to improve this situation. But nobody is actively working on such low-level changes at the moment so don't expect this to improve soon.
