Tiling - is there a better way?

Tiling - is there a better way?

Tiling is described on http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Tileable_Textures/ as "Select Layer -> Transform -> Offset. Then choose the convient "x/2, y/2" option, and hit OK. "

This is pretty awful.

Is this question better raised at the 'developers' mailing list?

A better way of doing textures would be to show 'phantom' copies of the tiled image like this:

| | copy | copy | copy | |
----------------+----------------+---------------- | |
copy | copy | copy | |
----------------+----------------+---------------- | |
copy | copy | copy | |

When you make a paint brush mark across a boundary you see it tiled properly!
Like this mock-up of 4 backslashes to simulate a diagonal line.
\ \
\ copy |\ copy |\ copy \ | \ | \ ---------------\+---------------\+---------------\ \ \
\ copy |\ copy |\ copy \ | \ | \ ---------------\+---------------\+---------------\ \ \
\ copy |\ copy |\ copy \ | \ | \

or viewing the image by itself without all the copies:

+---------------\+ \ \
|\ copy |
| \ |
+---------------\+

Do'h??

I thought the one line answer to this would rather be: Filters->map->make seamless

The result of this is less than perfect, and the time invested in the original mail seems to indicate that there is interest to implement it, and the bug report is the best possible answer in this case.

At least I don't read this mail as a basic "help, can someone please show me how to make a seamless texture?" message.

Make seamless is "make ghosts" in reality. It is only useful for abstract results. For anything that must look real or at least have some control, the current way is offset. And in other apps, the auto wrap around feature (a la pacman, exit to the left and you appear in the right), or that phantom proposal (it is what tileablur does, btw).

Thanks, Gilberto: Google made a passable translation for us ignorant Westerners who only have one language at:

yes..sorry...
I had not read the first e-mail with due attention. I saw the "copy""copy", part, my mind put "blur" in the place of the diagonal slashes, and whe n I had it off sight, I thught it was exactly about what make seamless does.

But indeed, it is exactly about what the bur report is.

At least I don't read this mail as a basic "help, can someone please show me how to make a seamless texture?" message.
