Isolating a picture

I'm new to GIMP and photo editing.

I want to take a picture of an item and then isolate it from the background so that I can make a flyer or catalog page.

1) can this be done and how?

2) assuming yes: the items are small, what should I place them on before taking the picture. I have been using a piece of styro foam (at someone's recommendation).
