Is it likely that the GIMP will ever support RAW images such as those from my XT?

It allready does, via plugins..
I use the dcraw plugin to manage my images from a Pentax *istDS. Its works like a charm.

Converting to 8 bit, so the concept is not 100% supported, it is more like using the camera's JPEG, but being able to redo (and all the steps afterwards, of course) as many times as you want (works, but wastes time). If it works like a charm with such limitation... I wonder what would be having the full input bits until the end. ;]

It doesnt convert to 8 bits.
Read more about it on the homepage: http://www.cybercom.net/~dcoffin/dcraw/

Uh? Gimp can load more than 8 bits per channel and work with that later? Since when?

You didnt specify GIMP in this case. I saw it as a statement on dcraw. dcraw doesn't convert.

The question was "Is it likely that the GIMP will ever support RAW images such as those from my XT?" and your reply was "It allready does, via plugins.. I use the dcraw plugin to manage my images from a Pentax *istDS. Its works like a charm." And my reply was about GIMP and RAW support too, and what charm would beceome when it really can work with the higher depth data instead of having to use downsampled data. The plugins do that downsampling, later and with more control than in camera JPEG, but you can not escape conversion with current GIMP. And I could also point that dcraw, as separate app, converts to 8 bit (param, -2, write 8 bit PGM/PPM/PAM default, or the man page is wrong) but I guess you will keep on saying something else.

It already does, via plugins. There are several, I use ufraw, which works and integrates with GIMP just great.

Cheers, Simon
