Recently got "educated" and the way you do it is that you either right-click on the "floating selection/layer" and choose "layer/new layer" which transforms it into a "new" layer. Or you could right-click on the "floating layer" in the "layer, channels, paths, undo"-window and choose the "new layer" function.

OK..Not at the computer with Gimp at the moment..

I am an OS X user, so not sure if a "right click" alternative is available to me.
some apps offer a mac counterpart to right clicking; does gimp?

thank you for your quick response, Peter!

Doesn't the option-click *generate* a right-click? If not, I believe there are menus at the top; I think these are supposed to have the same contents as right-click menus, but I'm not sure.

Yes, it does. The image menu is also available as a menubar, the dockable right-click menu is also in the dockable menu which is accessible using the left mouse button. And then there is always Shift-F10...

However in this particular case pressing the New button at the bottom of the layers dialog should be sufficient.

Get the new Mighty Mouse. It has been blessed by Apple, so you may now use multi-button mouses, too :)
