Graphics Tablet not responsive Gimp 2.8

Graphics Tablet not responsive Gimp 2.8
My newly installed Turcom 6580 graphics tablet works fine until I try to use it in gimp. When I open gimp, either pen pressure does not work, or the tablet stops working entirely until I open another window. Gimp functions fine with my mouse and the tablet functions fine as a pointer in any other application.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled both gimp and the tablet drivers several times now. Has anyone had this issue before? I'd be happy to hear any suggestions from the community.
