ubuntu PPA - thanks

Thanks for the tips about the PPA. Sorry my posts were so long winded.

I think Thorsten is building dev versions called "gimp-edge". His ppa is here for it:

https://launchpad.net/~otto-kesselgulasch/+archive/ubuntu/gimp-edge

I don't know if my last email got to the list. Maybe not and perhaps it's just as well because I foolishly hadn't read through the notice about the new release, which has a link to compiling instructions (haven't yet studied that but it looks like it does).

My original question was whether there's an ubuntu PPA from the developers. I see there's a PPA called "gimp edge." Is that recommended??

Or maybe I'll try compiling. I've never done that for a linux app.

With gimp is there any advice regarding version numbers? Like odd numbers are stable and even are cutting edge or anything like that?

Tips/thoughts would be appreciated if you have any.

Thanks in advance!!

Sorry this time I forgot to add that I'd like to use a version of gimp that features more than 8 bits/color, hence my questions about PPA or compiling.

And forgot to say that I'm using ubuntu studio 16.04 64 bit.

Thanks again, and for the wonderful gimp.

This is the page and details of the packages. https://launchpad.net/~otto-kesselgulasch/+archive/ubuntu/gimp-edge

Instructions are on the page but I advise uninstalling your existing Gimp 2.8
packages first.

then

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp-edge sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gimp

Note: Unlike Gimp 2.8 the Gimp profile is ~/.config/GIMP/2.9

I run this in a kubuntu 16.04 64 bit - no real problems

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u94zf3-tGQ0 In this video it is shown a photography pack installed in Gimp. It is an evolution of the shellout plugin, adapted to work with Nik collection and lightzone. In the same youtube channel you can find the tutorial on where to
download and install it.

Subject: [Gimp-user] Need help with Gimp keyboard shortcuts Message-ID:
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8

Hello All,

The company I work with is looking to switch from Photoshop to Gimp. One of the
keyboard shortcuts that is frequently used in Photoshop by our employees is
Ctrl+Alt+Shift and the directional arrow keys. This is used with the marquee
tool to copy and paste the selected part of the image without having to manually
drag the selection with the mouse. So far I have not been able to find a similar
keyboard shortcut inside of Gimp. If anyone can help me it would be much appreciated. Also, this is my first post here so please let me know if I left
anything out or didn't follow etiquette.

I have attached a quick screen of a sample image we would be using this on.

The selected region is copy and pasted by using the Ctrl+Alt+Shift and right
arrow key to clear the vertical combed lines from the image.

Thank you in advance for the help, Craig

Thank you. For someone whose typical use is to tweak and crop an image and then,
often, print it, that seems a rather fundamental bug: it is a pain to have to
use two applications for a simple task. I came to GIMP because my trusty Picture
Publisher, obtained many years ago from a CD on the back of a magazine, doesn't
work with Windows 10. However, I have now found Paint.net, which (via an add-on)
does have the ability to place an image on the paper. If, one day in the future,
that stops working with Windows 15. I'll come back and see whether this bug has
been fixed! Cheers, John_D

subunit? sorry I do not harvest test results.

All I can say is it (generally) works.

However, not all scripts and plugins work. Currently struggling with Separate+

What does work is sufficient for my use.

Compat mode is off so often a script generates lots of error messages but gets
there.

Easy enough to try out and revert to Gimp 2.8.x if not happy.
