New to GIMP, please help.

Hi All.

I am new to The GIMP and somewhat new to photo editing in general. A relative has given me a phot that she wants two people cut out of the middle of. Of course they had to be in the middle so I am having a hell of a time cutting them out and making it look reasonable. Is there a tutorial or does anyone have any advice on how this can be accomplished?
