I think it would be great if the gimp-plugin-template included support for a preview of the operation...

gimp-plugin-template is meant to be a template that shows you how to package and build a plug-in. It isn't really meant as an example of how to write a plug-in. If you are looking for such examples, I suggest you take a look at one of the several hundreds of plug-ins that ship with the GIMP source.

Btw, GIMP 2.2 will come with new preview widgets that will make it a lot easier to add a preview to a plug-in.
