Processing RAW pics?

Hi All, best wishes for 2015. I have recently installed GIMP 2.8 because it is advertised as the free alternative to PS and Lightroom. Installation worked like a charm and I was happily opening a test directory I had set up with some old pics to play around with. Disappointment struck, the application did not recognise any file in the directory. I shoot RAW and you can probably guess where this heading. Is there no way I can use GIMP for processing RAW files? If yes, I'd be delighted to know how. If not, how do I work around this problem?

I have looked at UFRaw, but the maker himself says the plug-in does not work with GIMP 2.8. So I installed it stand-alone and it works well enough. But I would not like to do some kind of pre-processing in UFRaw, then convert to JPEG (or another format that GIMP recognises, TIFF would probably better) and then load it into GIMP for the final touches, e.g with the ...erm, magic wand. I would prefer to do all processing in RAW and then convert.

You need to install either the ufraw or dcraw plug-ins for GIMP. I prefer dcraw. When you open a RAW file when using the ufraw plug-in you get a dialog box from ufraw with all its standard image manipulation features before you have even loaded it in to GIMP to see what might need to be done to the image.

Cheers!

Kevin.

An alternative to Ufraw is Rawthrapee. You have to save the result of Rawtherapee as a tiff file. Works fine!

It even works with GIMP from unstable branch. Why would it not work with v2.8?

Processing RAW pics?

I devide my workflow between Rawtherapee and Gimp. Correcting exposure, color temperature, whitebalance etc I do in Rawtherapee. The rest, for instance levels, curves, crop, usm, text and everything where you need layers for, I do in Gimp.

Ruud, thank for your advice and comments. I have decided to give it up and go back to View-NX, where I can process my RAW files, save them as RAW files and continue processing them at my convenience. Only after I am satisfied with the results will I convert to JPEG. Granted, View-NX is a bit basic and it lacks the sophistication of GIMP or Rawtherapee, but this constant messing about with file formats is simply too irritating to me. As soon as GIMP is able to process RAW in a normal manner, I will be back in a flash.

Kind regards to all, Bert Vester.
