Gimp Contact Sheets

While there are hundreds of references on the internet, Gimp sites and YouTube referring to the indexprint plugin, not ONE tells me what to do with it once it downloaded and installed! I can see it listed as an installed plugin under my Help menu, but nothing on the menu bars that even hint of its function. "Batch Manipulation?" Tried that. Gimp manual search (RTFM)? Tried that. Youtube tutorials? Not a chance.

Okay wise ones... How do I create a contact sheet in Gimp?

And you are absolutely right! Why is this manual not mentioned on any one of the tutorial pages https://www.google.com/#newwindow=1&q=create+a+contact+sheet+in+gimp ? I am so grateful for the help, Tobias! Thanks again...

Because a tutorial that says "just RTFM" isn't going to attract a lot of readership:)

Upon first glance, the little user manual looked fine. However, upon attempting to step-by-step use it, I immediatly ran into a roadblock...

Paragraph 4 of page one states: ...If the plugin is started then the following popup window appears (Figure 2). In the following paragraphs we will discuss all elements of this popup. The figures stand mentioned at the paragraphs."

How do I start it or know if it is already started? What am I missing here?

Does

"Where can I find it in the menus?"

summarize your question?

Thank you for answering maybe but, I don't think so... I find the plug-in under the "Help" menu. The question is "Do I open a photo (or photos) first or open the plug-in first? " And ,yes, once the photo(s) or plug-in is open, where do I find it on the menu as an option? In plain English, how do I get to all of these dialog boxes shown in the manual? Is it because I need to download something called "Python?" If so, what do I do with the file once it's downloaded?

Please remember, I am a professional photographer not a Linux enthusiasist. I, like you all, am just trying to do my job while eliminating Windows bloat and giving even more money to Adobe. I truly appreciate all the GIMP team has done but, respectfully, if it's going to be offered in a Windows version, please assume Windows users, not Linux enthusiasists, are going to be the ones using it and write your manuals and tutorials to that audience.

Remember, several individuals have taken it upon themselves to compile gimp for windows/mac. The application is not specifically built for windows or mac, but for linux. Why do you suppose that anyone but a windows or mac user would write/offer manuals or tutorials *specifically* for those platforms? Besides, the manuals and tutorials are not aimed at any particular platform but for the application which performs very similarly on all platforms, at least not much different that different versions of gimp which all act *somewhat* different.

I know it's not GIMP, but if you're just looking to solve the problem of generating contact sheets for a directory of images, imagemagick might be helpful (not sure if it will, but figured it might be worth at least a mention):

The recent Windows installers include Python. Thus installing a python plugin may be much easier on this platform than on some Linux flavors :) At least if the Linux users does not know about the package management for their distro.

P.S. to all the "how to install scripts/plug-ins/brushes" tutorial authors out there: please do not include paths directly into your tutorials, but tell users where and how to find those in GIMP's preferences. Thanks.

Can you specify the url where you got the plug-in? This can be helpful, maybe the author has changed the menu locatrion over some version...

The question is "Do I open a photo (or photos) first or open the plug-in first? " And ,yes, once the photo(s) or plug-in is open, where do I find it on the menu as an option? In plain English, how do I get to all of these dialog boxes shown in the manual?

I would have tried to click on the menu entry you found. What happens if you do this?

Is it because I need to download something called "Python?"

If the plug-in you got is a python plug-in, then it wouldn't show up if you hadn't Pythpn installed. The GIMP Windows installers include Python.

Please remember, I am a professional photographer not a Linux enthusiasist.

If you are using Linux, you'll install software via your Linux distros package management.

Old_Seafarer,

My windows/Mac builds obtained from www.partha.com may be helpful to you. They include Python and several plugins which are useful to Photographers. Let me know if they are useful to you.

Regarding this specific plugin you are talking about, a link to its location would be very helpful to help you.

Thanks, Partha
