Command-line functions are no good for this job. You need to be looking at the image, so that you can:

(1) See what the annotation should be (2) See that the text is positioned correctly, and of suitable size and font.

Gimp is (was) perfect for that - simple and smooth.

In case I can't find a suitable GUI alternative, I have put a block on any further updates to Gimp on Mandriva.
