How to create a ZOOM tool

Hi, I'm developing a zoom tool for a Paint activity for OLPC. The activity uses only PyGTK for Image manipulation. I'm looking for an algorithm to implement the zoom tool. Can you help me sending information or where I can get it. Thanks a lot
