Symlink bug report

When saving on top of a symlink, the program follows the symlink and creates the file with the destination file name and type extension. This can be problematic if saving in PNG, and the outcome is JPEG.

You have a symlink

foo.png -> foo.jpg

and then you tell GIMP to export to foo.png, effectively writing to foo.jpg

GIMP is behaving exactly as it should, the broken symlink is your own fault.
