Latest Gimp git (git pull today) Opening NEF images

Gimp cannot open a D800 NEF image (36 MP) (fuzzy static), partially opens a D610 image (24 MP).

It is able to open a D7000 (16.7MP), D300, D50 NEF images fine.

When the D800 image is converted to TIFF with dcraw, the TIFF of course opens fine.

Windows 8.1 64bit 16G RAM etc.

Thanks, Partha

gimp does *not* support proprietary formats, nef is cw by nvidia. You need to use ufraw which has a a gimp plugin, at least for linux, to convert the file to a format gimp can read. I seem to recall a windows executable for ufraw *is* available.

Did nVidia acquire Nikon? I don't think so :)

I don't think you need to lecture Partha about UFRaw :) He's been using it for years. The question is whether he has UFRaw 0.19 and newer.

Thanks Alex. :)

Anyway, for the other poster, Gimp git has been supporting NEF (through GEGL which calls dcraw directly) for quite sometime in case you are not aware. NEF is the RAW format created by a Nikon DSLR and hence my listing of the Nikon cameras. :)

My wild guess is that it's a GEGL tile issue?

Thanks, Partha

The Nikon website asserts plainly that the NEF format is "Exclusive to Nikon." NEF stands for "Nikon Electronic Format".
