De/composition?

Hello.
As I was working on my 'posterize' op, the thought occurred to me that it would be better to allow it to operate on separated-out color channels. Is it currently possible to compose/decompose buffers from/to their constituent channels? If not, is it possible to implement this within the current system? I know that multiple inputs are possible, but are multiple outputs?
