Text Editor Popup/Overlay Dialog

The overlay-ed Text Editor in Gimp 2.8+ is extremely annoying - how can I choose a proper font if I can't see my image?! afaik there's no way to disable it :/

Please tell me I'm wrong!

The on-canvas text editor is new in 2.8, but one of the things you need to mind is that the font face/size/options shown on it only affect selected or subsequent text input -- when you need to control the font face/size/etc. for the text layer as a whole, you'll need to set it from the Text tool's options.

The major advantage is completely and 100% WYSIWYG text editing. However, if you prefer the separate text-editing window, just enable the "Use text editor" checkbox in the tool's options.

Indeed - maybe everyone agrees it could be hidden if the user sets the "user editor" on the
tool options (to type the text in a pop-window)?

The unstable version has an experimental feature to move all on-canvas widgets to the top right corner of the image window. Not for the text one yet, afaik, though.

In my experience (and I use the text tool a lot) the on-canvas widget doesn't interfere with my work, but I can see how someone would have problems with smaller images. So there are a few options to consider, and, imo, this is where we need input from Peter.

P.S. Sorry about the blank email.

Just to add a little support.

No doubt a very useful facility (I can think of several times when i had wished it existed) but the fact I cannot clearly see the image above where I'm entering text is a significant frustration and annoyance.

Need to be able to move or hide the popup.
