Gimp freezes when invoked from FrameMaker; why?

This discussion is connected to the gimp-user-list.gnome.org mailing list which is provided by the GIMP developers and not related to gimpusers.com.

Gimp freezes when invoked from FrameMaker; why?

All:

I use The Gimp (Gnu Image Manipulation Program) to work on PNG, GIF, JPEG, etc. screen dumps to include in user documentation developed in FrameMaker.

In FrameMaker, you can double-click on a graphic imported by reference to invoke the default graphics program. When I double-click a PNG screen dump, The Gimp launches as expected and opens the original PNG file. Since this graphic is to be edited to create a different version, my first act is to save it under a different name by right-clicking and choosing File > Save As from the context menu.

However, the menus disappear, leaving grey rectangles where they overlapped the graphic, and The Gimp freezes. Eventually, I can kill the gimp.exe process from the Windows 2000 task manager, but it sure doesn't want to die.

Any ideas why The Gimp is freezing?
