Added Bitcoin donation option

Hi there,

we have added a Bitcoin address as a donation option to our donations page at http://www.gimp.org/donating/

The address is: 1NVMCeoBfTAJQ1qwX2Dx1C8zkcRCQWwHBq

Was is Bitcoin? Wikipedia to the rescue:

"Bitcoin (BTC) is an online digital currency that is based on an open-source, peer-to-peer encryption protocol first described in 2009 by a pseudonymous developer (or developers) Satoshi Nakamoto. Bitcoin is not managed by any government or central authority. Instead, it relies on an Internet-based network. [...]

Bitcoins can be transferred through a computer or smartphone locally or internationally without an intermediate financial institution. Each bitcoin is subdivided into 100 million smaller units called satoshis, defined by eight decimal places."

Check out the Wikipedia article at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitcoin for more information.

There has been demand for a Bitcoin donation option for some time already. We had delayed that option because we couldn't really use Bitcoins per se - I still do not know about any place where plane tickets are for sale, and these are our biggest expenses overall.

But there are finally some reliable exchanges popping up, which are located in countries where the responsible treasuries regulate them like any other exchange (i.e. not the Cayman Isles :)

More recently I chose to delay adding the address due to the current Bitcoin hype, with prices well over USD 200 - I didn't want GIMP to appear like an opportunist who's just after quick money. Prices are now returning to sane levels, and stability in regard to exchange rates seems to return as well.

We use the donated money to reimburse GIMP team members for travel and accommodation to conferences, most prominently the Libre Graphics Meetings.

For Libre Graphics Meeting 2013 in Madrid, España (an awesome event, which all of us who went there are glad to have been able to attend), we also contributed to the global refund pool and sponsored drinks for the conference party at "Mi madre era una Groupie" in Calle Santa Polonia.

... and we're getting donations. Many thanks for that, whoever you are

- unless people identify themselves as being the owner of a Bitcoin address, there is no easy way to tell who's behind one.

On the other hand, telling how much we receive is very easy. The transaction history of Bitcoin is public. This is one of the basic principles of the system, and thus you can browse the history at e.g.

http://blockchain.info/address/1NVMCeoBfTAJQ1qwX2Dx1C8zkcRCQWwHBq (shiny, export)

https://blockexplorer.com/address/1NVMCeoBfTAJQ1qwX2Dx1C8zkcRCQWwHBq (no frills data display)

Our announcement has been picked up by Reddit in r/Bitcoin, http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1cba75/, and the weekly Bitcoin Update podcast by Bitcoin Austria mentions the announcement in issue 21, http://bitcoinupdate.com/index.php?id=10 (around 39:04 minutes into the episode; language: Österreichisch)
In addition, all the sites repeating gimp-user and gimp-developers posts have it as well.

The fact that we got coins means that we can and have to think about ways for transferring the donations to the GIMP account, which is managed by the GNOME Fundraising team who are doing a good job at that.

The most viable options for that seems to be Coinbase.com, despite my mixed feelings about it:
https://plus.google.com/110300216597663852321/posts/hpT1oVVWu2g. My main concern isn't that they aren't trustworthy, but that they may not be able to uphold their promises and standards to keep that data safe. Hunting lots of bugs in other software just drops your confidence somewhat.

But whether this can be used directly is for the GNOME Foundation Board to decide. Having the option to limit a Coinbase account to only receive and sell coins would certainly make that easier, as you do usually not want to buy them from an account that's only supposed to receive donations. Their merchant accounts might allow for that: https://coinbase.com/merchants

I notice WordPress uses BitPay:
https://bitpay.com/bitcoin-direct-deposit

I have no idea how they compare, but perhaps you could ask Automattic.

With so many gemological labs around the world which offers various grading services, GSI is one gem lab, I have been working for years now and I trust and prefer my orders. They have a professional approach to their work. A variety of grading reports are offered by their expert team for diamonds, jewellery and coloured gems. Their grading reports stand for innovation, integrity, and professionalism. On https://gemscience.net/services-and-reports/grading-reports/ they have given some more information and through this, you can also contact them as well.

A buddy just requested me to teach him and especially bitcoin to cryptocurrencies. I didn't know for a long time where I should start with him, but I recalled thebitcoin price prediction for this site. It contains a lot of knowledge about the future price of Bitcoin. I had learned here a few weeks ago that cryptocurrencies most likely will fall and I could sell part of my crypto-savings to profit.
